I heard a calling within me to go wild.

Not in the ‘crazy’ sense of the dye my hair purple, set fire to street rubbish bins and become a liability to be around kind of wild.  But the instinctive, return to nature and earth, wake up and dive in the ocean at your feet kind of wild.  The wildness that requires solitude for a day, a night or more.

I felt this calling in my soul when I opened my book ‘Women Who Run with the Wolves – Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype’.  A book that I’m not in the middle of reading, but one that I find its message when I need it, when I open it quickly and randomly and find myself reading the chapter ‘Homing; Returning to Oneself – The Practice of Intentional Solitude’.

What I wanted was not complete solitude, but to return to nature and sleep surrounded with the sounds of the wind and rain above my head and the ocean applauding me.  (That night I dreamt of the roar and applause of huge audiences of people which mimicked the sound of the tides rolling pebbles around).

I’ve mentioned this book before, a must read for all creative women who want to converse with the wild feminine within.

In order to converse with the wild feminine, a woman must temporarily leave the world and inhabit a state of aloneness in the oldest sense of the word.  Long ago the word alone was treated as two words, all one.  To be all one meant to be wholly one, to be in oneness, either essentially or temporarily.  That is precisely the goal of solitude, to be all one.  It is the cure for the frazzled state so common to modern women, the one that makes her, as the old saying goes, “leap onto her horse and ride off in all directions.”*

There is a time for most women when the wild part of her needs attention.  She’s there within us all, often domesticated like a cat, yet like cats, you can never extract the instinctual wildness that is a part of her totality. She needs her time, just like the Queen or the Mother or the Creative Career Woman needs theirs.  She needs her time away from walls and appliances, wifi and apps and from the familiar routine.  Time to integrate and hear what this wild part wants to say.  Her wildness can emerge in spontaneous moments anywhere; in the bedroom or in her need and calling to return to earth and solitude for a while.

Our wildness is closely connected to our primitive nature.  Our indigenous humanity, our desire for freedom and to feel our connection to this earth.

Through camping, hiking, walking, be it like a Queen, a Princess or a Foraging Cave woman, it brings us close to the elements of nature.  We can be closer to the earth, feel the movement of the wind in the sails of the tent, the sound and smell of the rain whisking through the fragile, permeable shell of canvas.

There is the sound of ocean close by, of swallows swooping and a forest of tall pine trees swaying in unison.  And here I lay in the centre of this wild feminine nature energy, drawing out the wild feminine in me.

Camping Queen

It can be this simple.  No epic trek into the wilderness for weeks, no camping high on a mountaintop or delving deep into the jungle.  One night or two, one day, one moment to listen, to commune with our wild woman and to feel the familiarity of home in the larger sense; beyond the limitations of a house or flat.  I am home.  Home on earth, home in this place, home here for this time.  My home is me, I am it and the earth holds me within the home that she is.

On her return from intentional solitude, she is renewed, has heard the guidance of her wild woman and integrates this wisdom into the current life she has created.

She is a modern day wild woman.
